Preview: Decoupage and Editing of an Old Film
Look again at the first feature film Arroseur arrosé (1895), Lumière brothers. How do you edit such a movie? The film story consists of one scene. And that scene consists of one shot. In short there is nothing to edit.
More than a century later we can cut the film in pieces by electronic means and put it back together. Click here for the edited version.

Preview: Breaking the Rules
After you have mastered editing techniques, it is time to deliberately use them in a wrong way. The following humorous spot shows a nice example of such abuse. In the first 8 seconds, there are 5 jump cuts. Everyone understands that this has been done to compress time. In addition to these deliberate errors there is also a "real" continuity error in the film. Play the movie again and see if you can find it. If not, carefully watch the position of the left arm of the boy.
