The travel movie is an example par excellence of a genre in which you have to devise on the spot how to shape the scene. The mnemonic of Siam Axis is really handy. To illustrate this point we use an excerpt where the car passes the elephant. S: Shot scale. These vary from LS to MS.
I: Insert Shots. The shots of the women were filmed later.
A: Angle. The pass-movement is filmed from three angles: front, rear (from within the car) and sideways.
M: Movement camera. When the car passes the elephant the camera follows the car. The point of attention is drawn to the car. In the next shot, the camera is in the car.
Axis. The direction of movement is consistently from left to right.
